Paperbark

21 Year Old Maury Rancio Cask

As a valued member of Australia's most exclusive whisky club, the 21 Club, you enjoy unrivalled access to 21 exceptional bottlings of our oldest and rarest whiskies - each a distinctive piece of Australian whisky history.

This month, we are delighted to offer you exclusive access to
21 Club Release No.04 - Paperbark.

The Cask

Paperbark has spent the last year of its maturation in probably the most obscure and rare casks ever used for an Australian Single Malt Whisky - a Maury Rancio barrique. Maury is an appellation in the Roussillon region in the in the south west of France, just inland from the Mediterranean coast near the border with Spain.

Maury Rancio is a fortified dessert wine made principally from Grenache grape.  It is first aged in glass demijohns exposing it to light, developing the "rancio" character of ripe fruit and nuts.  It then has extended further maturation in French oak barriques.

This wine is so rare and little known outside its region that we thought you really need to try it yourself - accompanying each bottle of Paperbark is a 50ml tasting sample of Maury Rancio "Mas Amiel Maury Cuvée Prestige 10 Ans".

Tasting Notes

Nose

The Paperbark Tasmanian Single Malt whisky offers an inviting nose, where warming spices and rich oak tannins blend with ripe orchard fruits, golden syrup, and vanilla. As it opens, the rancio character from the Maury cask emerges, evoking earthy autumn leaves and apples fallen from the tree.

Palate

The palate delivers a balance of rich caramel, pineapple, and stone fruits, with leather and tobacco adding depth to the toasted malt character. This beautifully oily dram coats the tongue, showcasing a refined elegance and smooth integration of alcohol.

Finish

The finish is long and complex, leaving a lasting impression of richness and warmth.

The Paperbark

Each of our 21 Club releases has featured a Tasmanian endemic rainforest tree, species that are unique, beautiful and brought to life in the drawings of Inti Callaghan on the labels of the 21 Club whiskies.

For this release, we chose an extremely resilient and native Tasmanian plant, Paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia), to feature on the label. It plays a vital role in supporting native wildlife with its dense growth that provides shelter and nesting sites for birds and supports local biodiversity.

Just as the layers of Melaleuca ericifolia's papery bark peel back to reveal layer on layer of colour and delicate design, the palate of this extraordinary Maury Rancio cask Tasmanian Single Malt reveals layer on layer of delightfully surprising complexity.

This treasured release will come with a Certificate of Authenticity, a note from the artist Inti Callaghan and a postcard sized version of Inti's beautiful artwork.
