21 Club Release No.08 - Leatherwood.
The Whisky
This whisky is the result of a sliding doors moment. It’s the last cask from a wider vatting of casks that were used to fill tawny barrels. Once all the casks were filled, the remaining whisky was put into a brand new ex-bourbon cask. This single cask followed its own path, that led to a truly magnificent whisky.
Where the distillery team could have vatted the whisky back into the original cask, they opted for another first-fill ex-bourbon cask, in search of further vanilla and spice. There, Leatherwood spent two years and was aged to perfection.
The Magic of American Oak
Leatherwood is a Double American Oak 22 Year Old. The extra time in this first-fill cask has created an intriguing dram. It is definitely sweeter than a regular AO expression, but in a different, more subtle way than a fortified style of sweetness. It’s very elegant. Where we expected vanilla, coconut and spice, we not only got those notes, but also an abundance of tropical fruit.
Remarkable hues of chestnut with a burnished glow, highlighting its age and extended maturation in different cask types.

Each of our 21 Club releases has featured a Tasmanian endemic rainforest tree, species that are unique, beautiful and brought to life in the drawings of Inti Callaghan on the labels of the 21 Club whiskies.
For this release, we chose a remarkable tree found in deep pockets of wilderness, sheltered by the thick canopy of Tasmania's ancient rainforests. Leatherwood (Eucryphia lucida) is named for its small, leathery leaves, adapted to catch the dim, dappled light of the forest understory.
This treasured release will be complemented by a 50mL tasting sample of Leatherwood, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity, a note from the artist and a postcard sized version of Inti's beautiful artwork.
Please note that all 21 Club releases are pre-ordered and bottled only upon order placement. Our ordering window for Leatherwood closes on November 30, and the whisky will be dispatched in mid-December.
