21 Club Release No.07

Myrtle

22 Year Old American Oak and Pedro Ximénez cask

As a valued member of Australia's most exclusive whisky club, the 21 Club, you enjoy unrivalled access to 21 exceptional bottlings of our oldest and rarest whiskies - each a distinctive piece of Australian whisky history.

This month, we are delighted to offer you exclusive access to
21 Club Release No.07 - Myrtle.

An exceptional sherry cask whisky

Myrtle is not only the first 22 Year Old release in the 21 Club, but also our first Pedro Ximenez cask release. Head Distiller Fiona Coutts has made absolute magic with this whisky, in a rare cask that aged sherry at Bodega Fernando de Castilla for 40 years! With changes in the sherry industry, access to this kind of cask is near-impossible, and the time and effort dedicated to maintaining this cask were a feat!

Pedro Ximenez (known as PX) is classified as a "Naturally Sweet Sherry", where fermentation is halted by the addition of spirit before aging. Naturally sweet, compared to a cream sherry - PX is one of the most intensely flavoured and decadent fortified wines in the world.

This wonderfully aged whisky is one of the most precious to be found in our bond store and we are so excited to share it with you. Limited to 200 bottles, this whisky will be unlike anything you have ever tried.

An old whisky, in a very old cask

"The Pedro Ximenez cask we sourced for this release of the 21 Club has been verified by the Bodega as being around 40 years old and was utilised as part of the solera system for aging PX. A 225L cask with some dubious cracked and broken staves, it has been a labour of love to keep it safe and carefully monitored in the bond store, lest one of those staves failed, liberating our most precious whisky onto the bond store floor!

The cask is now nearing the end of its life and is set to be pulled apart and recoopered, that's if enough staves can be salvaged to rebuild it. We’re incredibly fortunate to have captured the rich influence of that PX in our beautifully aged single malt whisky."

- Head Distiller Fiona Coutts

Tasting Notes

Nose

Jersey caramels and apricot skins. Brioche French toast with currants and melting vanilla ice cream. Crunchy red delicious apples and hints of oak spice.

Palate

Rich and palate coating from the outset, dark fruit compote, lightly spiced with heavy dollop cream. Lemonade bubbles and stone fruit intensity come to the fore before mellowing into a deeply satisfying, honeyed finish of incredible length.

Finish

Long, lingering complexity that only very long-aged whiskies can bring.

Myrtle Beech

Each of our 21 Club releases has featured a Tasmanian endemic rainforest tree, species that are unique, beautiful and brought to life in the drawings of Inti Callaghan on the labels of the 21 Club whiskies.

For this release, we chose the vibrantly coloured Myrtle (Nothofagus cunninghamii). With small, yet magnificent leaves, this ancient plant is as important to the ecosystem as it is beautiful.

This treasured release will be complemented by a 50mL tasting sample of Myrtle and a 50mL sample of Fernando de Castilla Pedro Ximenez, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity, a note from the artist, and a postcard sized version of Inti's beautiful artwork.

Please note that all 21 Club releases are pre-ordered and bottled only upon order placement. Our ordering window for Myrtle closes on September 30, and the whisky will be dispatched in mid-October.
